There has been a lot of buzz about "300" the movie. If you browse through the movie's website, you will find some video displaying how the actors trained in preparation for the film. Is Spartan training CrossFit? Yes! Mark Twite, the Spartan trainer, was once a CrossFit affiliate who has since broken away from the community and fraudulently claimed the CrossFit philosophy as his own. Simply put, "CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program built on constantly varied, if not randomized, functional movements executed at high intensity." As a community, CrossFit has never attempted to copyright any exercises or workouts. However, some individuals have decided to take an open source model (CrossFit) and claim it as their own in an attempt to reject others within the strength and fitness community. I mention this merely in response to Mark Twite's threat of physical violence towards those who dare copyright infringement of material that he originally received from CrossFit. The intention of this post is to clarify that the name given to a particular type of training is irrelevant. CrossFit, Gym Jones, and Spartan training are all "strength and conditioning programs built on constantly varied, if not randomized, functional movements executed at high intensity." These are the original words of Coach Glassman, founder of CrossFit.
