Yesterday I had the pleasure of participating in the
Christmas Eve WOD at CrossFit Marina. It has been 3 months since my last WOD
and I could feel the time off.
During the past 3 months I have been very active while undergoing some
entry-level military training. The most notable change in my fitness was the
deterioration of my hip power. My ability to explosively open my hips at high
intensity has seemingly vanished. Because of which, I suffered through an hours
worth of “Eva”
5 rounds:
800m run
30 KB Swings (32kg)
30 Pull-ups
Without adequate explosive hip power, 150 reps of KB swings
and pull-ups was a painful evolution. During my post WOD recovery I immediately
began brainstorming on training methods focused on regaining my hip function.
At which point I was reminded that sticking to the basic CrossFit format
produces the best results. Stepping away from the cool aide is what put my body
in this state of deficient fitness in the first place. So why is CrossFit able
to produce results in areas where other training methods fail? The answer is so
simple. CrossFit does not focus on any singular physical ability. There is no
priority agenda other than pain. Crossfit is constantly varied, if not random,
functional activity performed at relatively high intensity. If you juxtapose
that concept with CrossFit’s emphasis on Virtuosity (doing the common,
uncommonly well) you experience a fitness program unlike any other.
